v Scholarships Fund – during the years 2006 and 2007, thanks to the financial support of the Roma Education Fund, we carried out a scholarships competition for Roma who have been enrolled as students in state-owned accredited university and who have received high marks during their study. Through this competition, organized into two rounds, a total of 209 Roma students received scholarships covering their university tuition fee. It can be seen that the number of scholarship holders is slightly higher than the number of applicant students who we have prepared. This is so because the scholarships competition is objective and open to all candidates, since there are such Roma students who, by one reason or another, were not known to us but who at a certain point come to take part in some of our programs. A basic principle of our Scholarships Fund is that we do not pay scholarships directly to candidates but we transfer the sums to the bank accounts of the universities and faculties where they are studying. Unfortunately, the funding of this very important competition was stopped in 2008, but the overall program continues its life through its other subprograms. By the current moment, the only scholarships program for Roma students is the Roma Memorial University Scholarship Program, supported by the Roma Education Fund and the Open Society Institute.
